The benefits of INTELLITURN are realized in many ways, such as improved performance, improved safety, higher quality, lower cost and greater design flexibility.  Both manufacturers and consumers alike get much more than expected with INTELLITURN:

Improved Performance & Safety

Totally Smart- The IntelliTurn system takes care of itself: Full knowledge of all vehicle movements and shut off points that are appropriate for each situation   It’s like having a turn signal co-pilot responding and reacting to the driver's inputs.

Totally Adaptable- Even the driver’s habits with turn signal usage can be compensated for with software learning capability.  IntelliTurn corrects for low pressure tires or spare tire usage and performs equally well with or without a trailer.  Wheel slip, traction control, ABS braking are all accounted for.

Totally Silent- The potential for a totally silent turn signal is now possible.  Imagine:  If a turn signal would take care of itself, then why would it have to make noise?  No more “tick tock” from the turn signal, no more “click” on and “clunk” off.  This is “noise-vibration-harshness” (NVH) enhancement bang-for-the-buck at its finest.  "Turn Signal On" alert warnings that are installed in some vehicles now can be eliminated with Intelliturn.

Performance That Comes Close to Perfection-  No more driving down the road with an erroneous turn signal.  No more premature turn signal shut off.  No more flashing the bright lights accidentally when hitting the turn signal.  With Intelliturn, he highly accurate turn signal performance of IntelliTurn makes for greater vehicle safety and lowers the potential for accidents.

Enhanced Driving Experience- Steering feel intrusion of the turn signal mechanism is eliminated, because there is no mechanical connection to the steering system.  In addition to always retaining the turn signal stalk in the traditional position (left side of steering wheel), the possibility of thumb control switches for full function turn signals on the steering wheel is now attainable.  Think of it: Right turn? Push right thumb.  Left turn? Push left thumb.  Even voice command turn signals could be integrated into a voice control equipped vehicle.

Functional Ergonomics- What we have is a turn signal switch that is always presented to the driver in the same position every time it is accessed.  A turn signal cancel button that is direct, simple and intuitive.  A lever with movement that feels “butter smooth” because it is a switch-only and there is no mechanism to engage. 

Driver Distraction Reduction- Various features have been added to vehicles that have recently raised safety concerns of distracted driving.  IntelliTurn in a vehicle contributes to the alleviation of overall driver distraction with its “takes care of itself” mission. 

Complies With Federal Laws- IntelliTurn integrated into a vehicle meets or exceeds all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) as well as SAE recommendations.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has documented approval for the use of Intelliturn in vehicles in the United States.

Diagnostics and Other Enhancements- Since the IntelliTurn system is based on computer control, system diagnostics can be performed to monitor malfunctions such as a burned out bulb. Other unique features are easily implemented like a four way flash that can automatically engage while ABS kicks in to alert surrounding drivers of a low traction, extreme braking situation.  This system even resets all turn signal functions to “off” when the ignition is turned off. 

Value-added Feature- The consumer perceives IntelliTurn as a need-based, high value feature.  A vehicle with this system is easily demonstrated and plays well in the showroom, in the test drive, in brochures and in advertising.  To any car or truck buyer, the result is easily understood and appreciated.  In effect, IntelliTurn is just one of those "must have" features that helps fulfill the increasingly difficult mission of “delighting the customer”.  Once the customer experiences IntelliTurn, all other turn signal systems will seem just plain old fashioned. 


Higher Quality

100% Digital Operation- IntelliTurn allows for the first time, a totally digital turn signal system.  It is the perfect companion to LED turn signal illumination and solid state lamp drivers that have now become commonplace in today’s vehicles.  A computer driven flash cycle means perfect on-off flashes that will not vary with engine speed, and the elimination of the abrupt “half flash” that can occur at shut off.  

Durability- With reliable electronics and no moving parts, a life-of-the-vehicle system reliability is now a reality.  An overall reduction of warranty expense is to be expected.  System robustness is increased dramatically. 


Lower Cost

Elimination of Steering Column Turn Signal Trip Mechanism- It is truly a rare case when an added feature actually costs less.  By utilizing ABS computers and sensors for turn signal control, the big cost of a turn signal mechanism is GONE!  Labor to assemble the mechanism: GONE!  For the vehicle manufacturer, the per-vehicle net savings with IntelliTurn can amount to an estimated $8 to $23, depending on vehicle architecture and other cost structure variables (savings may vary). 

Reduced Wire Count- “Many” high current capacity wires routed to the steering column can now be replaced by as few as “two” low current signal wires, potentially saving several dollars per vehicle.

Minimal Tooling Cost- Tooling costs are relatively low, and therefore implementation into existing platforms can be rapid and reasonable.  Implementation into new vehicle platform programs can cost-avoid tooling that would normally be budgeted.

System Development- Once the hardware is in place, software refinements to system performance are simple and low cost.  Development time and cost are both very low.  Upgrades to turn signal software system performance are easily implemented. 


Greater Design Flexibility

Switch Mounting- Vehicle designers are no longer confined to mounting the switch on the steering column.  The switch can now be mounted on either the dash or the steering column, with the lever presented to the driver in the traditional left-side-of-steering-column position.  This can potentially optimize manufacturing sequences and create a more efficient vehicle final assembly line. 

More Available Space in the Steering Column- The modern interior steering column is one of the most congested areas in the vehicle.  Elimination of the turn signal mechanism is a welcomed space relief to the layout of the vehicle.  But no matter where the IntelliTurn turn signal stalk location selected, the steering column can be made smaller, and re-arranging of other components is now possible.

LIN, CAN Integration- IntelliTurn can be integrated into on-vehicle networks such as LIN or CAN, or OBD.  This opens up new possibilities for added intelligence, features, functions, or savings.  Additionally, vital turn signal on/off status can be included in a vehicle’s “black box” or “Motor Vehicle Event Data Recorder” (MVEDR).  This important information could be potentially useful in accident investigations.

Switch Style- Shape, size, tactile feel, movement, interaction with stalk functions like bright lights, headlights, etc. are now limited only to the imagination of the designer.
